Henley Raw Feeding Guide

  • Post category:All

At Henley Raw, we want to make raw feeding as easy as possible. That’s why we’ve put together this raw feeding guide to make the transition simple for you and your pet.

Raw feeding can start straight away, you simply feed your dog their existing food and begin raw feeding the following morning.

A dogs diet should comprise of an 80/10/10 ratio; 80% meat, 10% bone, 10% offal. 5% of the offal should be liver. This is known as a BARF diet. You can choose to feed vegetables also but this is preference and not essential for your dog as your dogs stomach is not designed for digesting vegetables, so they mostly just pass through. By simply feeding an 80/10/10 ratio, your dog will be getting all the nutrients he/she needs.

Raw is fed at 2-3% of the ideal adult weight, puppy amounts are at the bottom of the page. (this is just a guide as all dogs are different, some will need more and some will need less)

When switching to raw, we advise feeding plain tripe mince for a week. This helps your dog’s digestive system to adjust to the new diet.

Meal Plan for starting on completes.

Week 1  Plain Lamb tripe mince. (this will help your dog’s stomach acidity adjust from kibble)

Week 2  Just Chicken complete.

Week 3  Ox tripe and duck complete or Ox tripe and Chicken complete.

Week 4  Lamb Tripe & Chicken complete or Lamb Tripe and Duck complete.

Week 5  Ox and Duck complete or Ox and chicken complete.

Week 6  Lamb or Pork Complete.

Now you are feeding a good variety, you can include Oily Fish, Raw Eggs and whole bones. (Please supervise your dog when feeding whole bones)

Meal Plan for starting with Non Completes and DIY

Week 1  Tripe Mince

Week 2  Tripe & chicken Mince or Tripe & Duck Mince. (These are 20% bone so will need to be mixed with plain tripe or one meal of each)

Week 3  Lamb or Ox Mince or Chunks (these are boneless so 10% bone needs to be added ie mix with Tripe & Chicken or Tripe & Duck mince)

Week 4  same as week 3 just choose a different Protein.

Now you can start adding Offal, a good raw diet should inc 5% Liver and 5% other Offal ie Kidney, Testicle etc. you can also add Oily Fish, Raw Eggs and Whole bones.

You should be aiming to feed at least 5-6 different Proteins Lamb, Ox, Duck, Chicken, Pork, Venison, Rabbit, Turkey etc. REMEMBER variety is needed to cover all nutritional needs.

Too much bone will cause constipation and could lead to impaction.

You may like to add vegetables and/or fruit to your dog’s raw diet.  This does no harm but is not essential.
